On 16 March 2022 the newspaper ABC published on 16 March 2022 that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had ordered the suspension of new visas and residence permits for Russian investors, as well as the freezing of pending applications.
This decision has been adopted in an internal directive and does not, at least not yet, alter the law that governs visas for foreign investors.
In the absence of details, it cannot be established whether pending renewal applications are affected, or whether only persons designated in EU sanctions are targeted.
Legally, the situation remains unchanged. The Foreign Ministry's decision is probably intended to stall the short statutory period of twenty days from application, after which the application is considered legally granted. However, it is a clear signal that the Government of Spain intends to changes the system of golden visas for Russian inventors.
As soon as a new legal regulation on this matter is in force, I will write about it in this blog.
